It is Sri Lanka’s most famous UNESCO heritage site. Rising dramatically over the jungle in the north-central plains, it is an iconic sight. Sigiriya has marvelled visitors since ancient times. So, can kids climb Sigiriya, too?
Can kids climb Sigiriya?
Yes! Sigiriya is not difficult to climb, and you do not have to be sporty fit to do so. However, it all depends on each child’s ability and temperament. The Rock is 180m high. There are 1200 steps, a series of scaffolding and handrails. Apart from the steps carved into stone, metal stairways bolted into the Rock make things easier.
How old should children be to climb Sigiriya?
Children of all ages can climb Sigiriya as long as they are well-supervised. Young children will need assistance at a slow pace. Therefore, less crowded days are more suitable.
When is the best time to visit Sigiriya with the kids?
Sigiriya is a major attraction during Sri Lanka’s high season, December to March. During the low season, visitors are scant. Low season is a good time when you want to climb it at your own pace and take all the time you need. Avoiding weekends ensures even fewer people.
Early morning (7 AM) or late afternoon (after 3.30 PM) is the best time. Sunny hours can get hot. The time you choose should give you ample time to spend at the summit, where the palace ruins are, and for the descent. Avoid sunny hours for the entire visit to make it more comfortable for kids. Sigiriya is open every day from 7 AM to 5.30 PM.
Stroll through the gardens after. Sigiriya’s water gardens are the best-preserved in South Asia and the oldest landscaped gardens in the world. They serve as a grand entrance to the Rock.
How long does it take to climb Sigiriya?
It can take between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours to reach the top. Time can vary depending on each individual’s stamina. When climbing with kids, especially younger ones, they may need rest breaks. Therefore, factor the breaks in when deciding the time.
What to wear when climbing Sigiriya?
There is no dress code. Modest clothing is recommended everywhere on the island. Choose comfortable and lighter fabrics and well-fitting hiking shoes. Take your sunglasses and hats. Wear sunblock. Remove hats if it gets windy.
What should you carry with you?
Bottled water is a must. Take a child carrier for your toddler. A snack may come in handy for your little one. Do not forget your camera. Backpacks, crossbody bags and waistpacks are the best to carry. Keep them as light as possible.
