Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the principal cause of infant deaths in Sri Lanka. Nearly ten out of 1000 infants born in the country die before they reach their first birthday due to CHD. Proper facilities, technology and care can significantly reduce this number. The proposed Cardiac and Critical Care Complex at Lady Ridgeway Hospital can save the lives of thousands of children suffering from heart diseases and critical illnesses.
Endorsed and unanimously approved by the Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians, it is a government-approved project deemed a national priority. Little Hearts is a fundraising campaign that brings together funding from concerned citizens for the project.
The 12-storey hospital wing will feature cardiac operating theatres, cardiac ICU beds, over 100 medical and neonatal intensive care beds, areas for advanced cardiac investigations and staff training facilities. The Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau estimates Rs. 5.7bn for the project.
